High School Internships

ISERP's summer high school internship program is designed to expose students to the work of social science investigation and research. Interns are matched with ISERP-affiliated faculty and scholars with whom they participate in the current, innovative research taking place at the Institute. In past summers, interns have worked on projects concerned with the built environment of the city, an oral history of the Council for Foreign Relations, and the allocation of community block grants in New York. In addition, interns take part in weekly seminars. These seminars focus on ongoing research at the University and are led by the faculty and scholars that are conducting the studies. 

• Internship activities vary depending on the skill set and interests of the intern and the needs of our  faculty and scholars.
• The duration of an internship is usually six weeks, from July through mid-August. Interns typically work for 30-35 hours per week.
• Internships take place on Columbia University's Morningside Campus in New York City, and all applicants must live full-time within commuting distance. Unfortunately, no housing is available.
•  Internships are designed for the summer between a student's junior and senior year of high school.
• Interns receive a small stipend to cover the costs of local transportation and lunch.

Applying to the High School Internship Program
ISERP is pleased to invite applications for our summer internship program. Only high school students currently completing their junior year are eligible to apply. Applicants from other grades will not be considered. Typically, four to six interns are accepted each year, depending on the needs of our faculty and scholars. Acceptance decisions are made after a series of interviews, and the deadline for applications will be announced in January, 2010. Please check back for the formal deadline at that time. • Applications
  There is no application form, instead please submit a resume and a letter of interest addressing why you are interested in the program and what you hope to get out of it by Monday, March 2nd, 2009. Submissions should be sent via email to Fletcher Haulley hgf2103@columbia.edu. We will acknowledge receipt of your application.

• Interview
  Selected applicants will be invited to our offices for an informal interview. Applicants must be available for an interview to be considered for this program.

•  Final Selection
  The final selection for the internships will take place shortly after all the interviews have been completed.
