The purpose of this solicitation is to encourage and support a series of projects aimed at increasing transparency and accountability throughout the research life cycle, with a special emphasis on open access, to increase the speed of the flow of information from funded research to action.

Computational Social Science

The Russell Sage Foundation’s initiative on Computational Social Science (CSS) supports innovative social science research that brings new data and methods to bear on questions of interest in its core programs in Behavioral Economics, Future of Work, Race, Ethnicity and Immigration, and Social Inequality. Limited consideration will be given to questions that pertain to core methodologies, such as causal inference and innovations in data collection.

Modeling Social Behavior Research Grant (R01)

This FOA encourages applications for developing and testing innovative theories and computational, mathematical, or engineering approaches to deepen our understanding of complex social behavior. This research will examine phenomena at multiple scales to address the emergence of collective behaviors that arise from individual elements or parts of a system working together. Emergence can also describe the functioning of a system within the context of its environment.

Science of Science - Doctoral Dissertation Research Improvement Grants

The Science of Science: Discovery, Communication, and Impact (SOS:DCI) program is designed to understand the scientific research enterprise and increase the public value of scientific activity. The program pursues this goal by supporting basic research in three fundamental areas:

How Network Structures Explain Creativity

Collaboration in and across teams increasingly distinguishes production in creative fields whether in academic research, business projects, civic activism, or cultural production, including music, film, design, and new media. The proposed research examines how working teams are expressions of larger, informal, yet relatively stable, communities. The task is to develop a set of network analytic tools to track how teams assemble, disassemble, and reassemble.

Topics in Analysis of Big Data and Complex Models

The proposed research seeks to provide researchers with new methods to study economic issues of current interest, making effective use of big datasets that are only recently available. The projects deal with issues in data preprocessing, estimation, and hypothesis testing. The emphasis is on methods with broad applicability and that can be put to practical use.

New Approaches for Dynamic Panel Data Analysis

The project seeks to develop new methods for modeling, estimation, and inference in panel data models with a factor error or approximate factor error structure. This error structure has roots in economics and finance, and the usual additive individual effects and time effects are special cases of this structure. Explanatory variables are correlated with unobserved factors and factor loadings.

Critical Techniques, Technologies and Methodologies for Advancing Foundations and Applications of Big Data Sciences and Engineering (BIGDATA)

The BIGDATA program seeks novel approaches in computer science, statistics, computational science, and mathematics, along with innovative applications in domain science, including social and behavioral sciences, geosciences, education, biology, the physical sciences, and engineering that lead towards the further development of the interdisciplinary field of data science.
