ISERP Launches Undergraduate Fellows Program

For the past two years, ISERP has selected motivated high school students to spend the summer working on research projects with faculty and scholars at the Institute. This year, ISERP will expand the program to include undergraduates interested in honing their research skills.

For students, it is a rare opportunity to gain a first-hand look at how social science research is produced. For faculty, it is an opportunity to receive help in getting their projects off the ground. Last summer, for instance, students worked on a project measuring the "built environment" of New York City. In coding the accessibility of New York streets, interns contributed to an initiative to determine whether more "walkable" cities produce a fitter populace. Others studied government recruitment structures, how Americans view death, and the efficacy of programs to help the homeless.

This summer, students will continue work on projects from past years as well as new undertakings. Some of the new projects for 2007 include the Project on Expertise (Gil Eyal), the Urban Stewardship Project (Dana Fisher), the Spatial Allocation of Social Provision: Government Contracting, Material Resources, and the Poor (Nicole Marwell), and The Politics of Inequality: Neighborhood-level Allocations of Community Development Block Grant Money (Justin Phillips).
