Gina Schellenbaum Lovasi earned her MPH in 2003 and her PhD in 2006 in epidemiology from the University of Washington. Her dissertation research examines neighborhood "walkability" as a determinant of cardiovascular risk. Working with an interdisciplinary team, Lovasi added neighborhood and built environment characteristics to an ongoing case-control study in Western Washington State. As a Health and Society Scholar at Columbia University, she continues to explore how the built environment shapes physical activity and cardiovascular health. New York City provides a uniquely diverse and pedestrian-oriented backdrop for moving this area of research forward. Lovasi plans to use her time as a Health and Society Scholar to explore the connections between research and policy, and to investigate how the tools of economics and sociology can inform her studies of the ultimate determinants of health behavior.
