Farmers Markets as a Strategy to Improve Access to Healthy Food for Low Income Families and Communities

by Kathryn Neckerman (ISERP)

This grant from PPS is to help complete research for the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation on the possible influence and reach of farmers markets to improve the neighborhood food environment, as part of an effort to reduce obesity rates among children and youth in low-income areas. The
project will conduct analyses of the farmers market management reports and previously collected customer survey data, carry out GIS analyses of market areas, carry out GIS analysis to support site selection for the street intercept survey, work with PPS to plan and implement new surveys and focus groups, and work with PPS to prepare reports and papers related to the current project.
