Farmers Markets as a Strategy to Improve Access to Healthy Food for Low Income Familes and Communities

by Kathryn Neckerman (ISERP)

Working with PPS, this is a mixed-methods study that combines in-depth analysis of the materials already collected by PPS with new data collection in order to answer the following questions:
1.    What strategies are most effective in developing financially sustainable farmers markets in low- to moderate-income communities across a range of settings?
2.    What market characteristics are most effective in attracting low-income and minority community shoppers to farmers markets?
3.    Is family food shopping at farmers markets associated with higher levels of fruit and vegetable consumption among children and youth?
4.    Among children and youth, does farmers market involvement promote nutritional knowledge and change attitudes towards eating fresh fruits and vegetables?
