Mali demotes French, language of its former colonizer, in symbolic move
Each time Chérif Keïta, a professor at Carleton College in Minnesota, lands in his native Mali and enters a taxi, he hears fewer radio hosts speaking French.
Some commentators mix French with local tongues, Keïta said. Others eschew it altogether.
