Jacob Kopas (Political Science), “Legitimizing the State or a Grievance? Property Rights and Political Engagement”

4:00-5:00 PM: Presentation 5:00-6:00 PM: Reception & Food

Location:

Lindsay Rogers Room (Room 707) 7th Floor International Affairs Building

Summary: “Property rights and the protection of property are fundamental to modern political theory. Struggles over rural land have sparked revolutions and political movements all over the world. But without the backing of the State and strong institutions, is a property right anything more than a worthless scrap of parchment? This presentation will discuss the symbolic power of legal property rights to change political attitudes and behavior.

Divya Subramanian (History), “Modernization in Decline: India’s Upper Krishna Irrigation Project, 1964-present”

Tuesday, October 24, 2017 - 04:00
4:00-5:00 PM : Presentation 5:00-6:00 PM Reception & Food

Location:

Lindsay Rogers Room (Room 707) 7th floor International Affairs Building

Summary: “What happens to development projects when international capital and experts have left the building? In 1964, construction began on the Upper Krishna Project, an irrigation works in the Indian state of Karnataka; fifty years and several highly-publicized rounds of World Bank funding later, the project’s main dam collapsed, sending six billion cubic feet of water rushing through in its wake. Examining the rise and demise of the Upper Krishna Project provides insight into the dynamics of deindustrialization and infrastructural decay across the former colonial periphery.”

Samuel Coggeshall (History) and Francisco Lara-Garcia (Sociology), “Restoring Interdisciplinarity to the Study of the Interwar Avant-Garde”

Tuesday, September 19, 2017 - 04:00
4:00-5:00 pm: Presentation 5:00-6:00 pm: Reception & Food

Location:

Lindsay Rogers Room (Room 707) 7th Floor International Affairs Building

Summary: “Representatives of the interwar modernist avant-garde not only worked across various artistic disciplines and in different media — they often viewed their artistic practice as direct interventions in other fields of human experience. These interventions were to be informed by knowledge derived from emerging scientific and humanistic disciplines, and were premised upon the possibility (and desirability) of interdisciplinary synthetic knowledge.
