Science and Technology Studies Dissertation Grant

The Science and Technology Studies (STS) program supports research that uses historical, philosophical, and social scientific methods to investigate the intellectual, material, and social facets of the scientific, technological, engineering and mathematical (STEM) disciplines. It encompasses a broad spectrum of topics including interdisciplinary studies of ethics, equity, governance, and policy issues that are closely related to STEM disciplines.

The Methodology, Measurement, and Statistics (MMS) Program is an interdisciplinary program in the Directorate for Social, Behavioral, and Economic Sciences that supports the development of innovative, analytical, and statistical methods and models for those sciences. MMS seeks proposals that are methodologically innovative, grounded in theory, and have potential utility for multiple fields within the social and behavioral sciences.

Stan, Scalable Software for Bayesian Modeling

This award is to design, code, document, test, dissememinate, and maintain Stan, an extensible open-source software framework and compiler for efficient and scalable Bayesian statistical modeling. Stan is an extensible, open-source, cross-platform software framework for developing Bayesian statistical models. The first step in Bayesian modeling is setting up a full probability model for all quantities of interest. Stan facilitates this process by providing an expressive and extensible domain-specific programming language for specifying probabilistic models.

Latent Space Models for Aggregated Relational Data in Social Sciences

How does the understanding of social networks contribute to social science? In particular, (1) which network features or observable characteristics encode social structure; (2) how do these features contribute to the formation of connections or social ties; and (3) how does network structure impacts diffusion, specifically the spread of influences, opinions, and diseases? A key difficulty in studying these questions is that most contributions to current understanding in this area come from a small number of applications where full network data are readily available.

Collaborative Research: Identification, Estimation and Inference of DSGE Models

This project develops the theory for identification of dynamic stochastic general equilibrium (DSGE) models and studies its implications for estimation and inference. DSGE models have now reached the level of sophistication to permit analysis of important macroeconomic issues. Whereas the parameters in these models used to be calibrated, numerical advances in the last two decades have made it possible to estimate models with as many as a hundred parameters.

The Well-being of Migrant Children and Children Left Behind

This research project will collect and analyze the first national-level data on migrant children and children left behind by one or both parents, as well as, for comparison, rural and urban children living with their parents. The investigators will use a 2008 national probability sample of the adult population of China, which collected complete rosters of the children of each respondent and all children residing in respondent?s households.

Political Communication and Accountability in Uganda

In many developing economies, poor social and economic outcomes are attributed in part to political decision-making that is unresponsive to the needs and preferences of citizens. Weaknesses of governance structures and social welfare in turn are associated with fragile security outcomes and economic failures that may in turn have implications for US economic and security interests. In light of these adverse outcomes, large amounts of development aid has been provided by the United States to bolster democracy and governance interventions in developing areas.

Collaborative Research: Transformations in Political Party Organizations and the Rise of Candidate-Centered Elections in the U.S., 1878-2008

Candidate-centered politics and personal voting in the United States are much stronger today than they were in the past, and party organizations are much weaker. This project asks two main questions: i) Why did this happen?; ii) What are the implications of this development for the future of American democracy?

Collaborative Research: Government Responses to Network Failures: The Case of the Manufacturing Extension Partnerships

While inter-firm networks provide an increasingly important alternative to arm's length transactions in knowledge-intensive industries, they are notoriously difficult to build and maintain. Various hypotheses have been advanced for the sources of such collaboration: cultural, organizational and institutional .

How Network Structures Explain Creativity

Collaboration in and across teams increasingly distinguishes production in creative fields whether in academic research, business projects, civic activism, or cultural production, including music, film, design, and new media. The proposed research examines how working teams are expressions of larger, informal, yet relatively stable, communities. The task is to develop a set of network analytic tools to track how teams assemble, disassemble, and reassemble.
